And The Goals Will Come is played by musicians representing three musical backgrounds – Irish traditional, jazz and classical. The piece makes space for the musicians to move between these genres and explore possibilities for overlap. The players respond to sound recorded pitch-side at the 2012 All-Ireland hurling final in Croke Park, snippets of Kilkenny captain Eoin Larkin’s post-match speech, and sound from the amplified hurl.

In section IV Directed, they are sent incitations: prompts from which to improvise. These short phrases are derived by a chance based process, from texts on topics including hurling, improvisation, mental health, classical and traditional music. The incitations are sent on screens to each musician, and examples can be seen on screen in this section of the film.

The work celebrates the artistry of hurlers and musicians, and the creative and technical skill they lovingly develop.

The importance of pacing, nerves, rhythm, mindset, technique, excellence, stages, outlook, and risk.

The overlap in vocabulary in the two disciplines; the training, the sacrifices, and the joy.

This piece can be performed live on stage or in bespoke locations, and also exists as a 30 minute long film. For exhibition / programming, please get in touch via the contact page.
